MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
The defense of the Master's Dissertation or Doctoral Thesis must be requested after the postgraduate student has:
- have completed the minimum course period (consult the SIGA System)
- passed the Qualifying Exam;
- have completed 23 credits in subjects, including compulsory subject(s) and/or 15 credits for entrants from the 2024 Catalog;
- have presented their higher education diploma no later than 60 days before the date of the defense.
PLAGIARISM CHECK
- The student must file a service order (SO) with the Library on the FCM Intranet to check for plagiarism in the dissertation or thesis, as provided for in FCM/CPG INSTRUCTION No. 01/2019. See step-by-step here.
- The report sent by the Library must be forwarded to the Program Secretariat in Step Three.
STEP ONE: APPOINTMENT OF THE EXAMINING COMMITTEE (UP TO 60 DAYS BEFORE THE DEFENSE)
The supervisor must send an e-mail to the PPG Coordination, with a copy to the Program Secretariat, suggesting the members of the Examining Committee, in accordance with Article 40 of the General Postgraduate Regulations, including two names who took part in the qualifying exam (memory member):
Article 40 - Once the Dissertation or Thesis has been prepared and the other requirements established in the Program Regulations have been met, the student must defend it in a public session, before an Examining Committee made up, in the case of the Master's Degree, of at least three full members and, in the case of the Doctorate, of at least five full members, all of whom must hold at least the title of Doctor. The Examining Committee will be chaired by the Dissertation or Thesis Advisor and the way its members are chosen must be defined in the Program Regulations.
§ Paragraph 1 - In the Master's Degree, excluding the Advisor, the number of external members must be at least equal to the number of internal members. The external members of the Examining Committee must be from outside the Program and the Unit(s).
§ Paragraph 2 - In the Doctorate, excluding the Advisor, the number of external members must be at least equal to the number of internal members. The external members of the Examining Committee must be from outside the Program and UNICAMP.
§ Paragraph 3 - The Examining Committees, in addition to the advisor and the full members, in the case of the Master's Degree, must also be made up of at least two more alternate members, one of whom must be external to the Program and the Unit and, in the case of the Doctorate, at least three more alternate members, at least two of whom must be external to the Program and UNICAMP. Please note
- co-authors of works published with the graduate student may not be nominated;
- a member from outside Unicamp is one who has not been linked to the University for the last five years, including former doctoral students;
- if the supervisor is unable to take part, he or she will be replaced by the co-supervisor. Otherwise, the co-supervisor will not be able to take part in the Examination Board, but their name will be recorded on the copies of the dissertation/thesis and in the defense minutes;
- only 01 (one) memory of the qualification may participate as a full member of the Thesis/Dissertation Defense;
- The Master's Board is made up of three full members. This number includes the supervisor;
- The doctoral committee is made up of five full members. This number includes the supervisor.
STEP TWO: SETTING THE DATE AND TIME OF THE DEFENSE
- The student must contact all the members of the Examining Board by e-mail, including the alternates, about the availability of the date and time;
- arrange for the room to be reserved for the defense and inform the board members of this;
- if the full members are not available on the desired date, the alternates must be appointed as full members.
- the need to appoint new alternates must be communicated immediately to the program secretariat.
THIRD STEP: SIMILARITY REPORT (Plagiarism) AND PUBLICATION

DOCTORAL DEFENSE:

- submit a published article or letter of acceptance of an article related to the research topic for publication in an indexed journal.
STEP FOUR: REQUEST THE DEFENSE IN THE ACADEMIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - SIGA (UP TO 45 DAYS BEFORE THE DEFENSE)
At this stage, the student must follow the steps indicated in the tutorial (PDF link).
It will be necessary for the program secretary to manually validate the data provided in the request and then for the advisor to do the same.
After approval by the FCM Graduate Committee, the invitation letters will be generated and sent via SIGA/DAC to the committee members.
STEP FIVE: THE DAY OF THE DEFENSE
- The defense can take place in person, with all internal and external members present, or in a hybrid format. In the hybrid format, the advisor, student and internal members must be physically present, while external members residing outside Campinas may participate remotely, in accordance with CCPG Normative Instruction No. 01/2022.
- The PPg in Pharmacology does not pay for per diems or airfare.
- It is recommended that students send a reminder to all members of the panel in advance.
