The Discipline of Cardiology, within the Department of Internal Medicine, offers a distinctive educational opportunity in our specialized areas of expertise. Throughout the week, at the Hospital das Clinicas, University of Campinas, we provide a comprehensive program that encompasses various activities in our outpatient clinics and medical wards. These activities include case discussions, examination observations, and presentations on diverse topics.
Our discipline is privileged to have a highly productive team of professors and attending physicians who possess expertise in numerous fields of cardiology. These areas of specialization encompass atherosclerosis, hypertension, acute coronary syndrome, cardiac interventions, cardiac surgery, heart failure, and cardiac transplantation.
By engaging in both theoretical and practical activities, students will have the valuable opportunity to immerse themselves in our clinical care routine. They will serve as observers during all procedures, and they will be encouraged to actively participate and offer their own perspectives.
The activities will be overseen by the following esteemed Professors, each specializing in a particular area of interest. As needed, additional consultant cardiologists will also participate in the activities. Please refer to the attached CV lattes link for their updated curriculum vitae.
Please note that we have organized a range of activities, some of which are optional. In other words, students have the flexibility to choose the activities that align with their interests and preferences. They can select the ones that are most suitable for their educational needs and goals.

Tuesday - July 4th
Intensive Care Unit Bedside Round/Discussion: 7:00-8:00 AM
During this session, students will actively engage in the daily ICU rounding discussions, collaborating with residents, fellows, attending cardiologists, professors, interventional cardiologists, and cardiac surgeons. Our ICU unit specializes in receiving complex cases referred from other hospitals, necessitating interdisciplinary discussions that involve not only clinical cardiologists but also interventional cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. This creates a dynamic and comprehensive "HEART TEAM" discussion environment. This interactive platform offers an exceptional opportunity for students to actively participate in discussions regarding patient cases, fostering a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

Cardiology Grand Rounds: 8:00-9:00 AM
The Cardiology Grand Rounds is a formal educational activity where a resident or fellow delivers a presentation on a topic of interest in the field of cardiology. Following the talk, there will be a question-and-answer session to foster a stimulating debate. Additionally, a challenging clinical case will be presented, involving the participation of all staff members and professors.
Non-invasive Imaging: Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT Reading Session: 9:00 AM-12:00 PM
Under the guidance of Professor Otávio Coelho Filho, students will engage in a reading session focused on complex cases requiring the utilization of advanced Cardiac MRI and CT. The cases will cover various conditions, including ischemic heart disease, Chagas' disease, cardiomyopathies, pre-ablation cases, pre-TAVR cases, and pre-heart transplant cases.
Direct Supervision: Prof. Dr. Otávio Coelho-Filho.
Ward/Intensive Care Unit Rounding and Procedures: 2:00-5:00 PM
During this period, students will participate in ward and ICU rounds with residents and fellows. They will actively accompany patients undergoing procedures such as cardiac catheterization surgeries, as well as assist in the interpretation of diagnostic examinations like CT scans, echocardiograms, and nuclear medicine studies.
Wednesday - July 5th

Hypertension Outpatient Clinic: 9:00-12:00 AM (optional)
Under the direct supervision of Professor Nadruz Jr., students will actively participate in multiple outpatient visits involving patients with hypertension. The focus will be on preventing complications through the implementation of the latest guideline recommendations. This valuable experience will provide students with the opportunity to witness the practical application of evidence-based management strategies for hypertension in a clinical setting.

Echocardiography Laboratory: 9:00-12:00 AM (optional)
Under the direct supervision of Professor Mattos Jr., students will have the opportunity to actively engage in the acqusition and interpretation of both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms in patients with various cardiac conditions. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art techniques, including 3D and speckle tracking, which have demonstrated significant utility in the evaluation of numerous cardiac conditions. This hands-on experience will enhance students' proficiency in echocardiography and their understanding of its clinical applications.

During this session, students will actively participate in the daily ICU rounding discussion alongside residents, fellows, attending cardiologists, and professors. It provides an excellent opportunity to engage in interactive discussions about patient cases.

Valvular Heart Disease Outpatient Clinic: 9:00-12:00 AM
Under the direct supervision of Professor Mattos Jr., students will have the valuable opportunity to observe consultations with patients presenting with highly complex valvular heart disease. This outpatient clinic focuses on the selection of patients who are candidates for open-heart surgery or, if appropriate, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and other innovative structural heart interventions. This experience will provide students with insights into the comprehensive management and treatment strategies for patients with challenging valvular heart conditions.

Heart Failure/Cardiomyopathy Outpatient Clinic: 2:00-5:00 PM
Under the supervision of Professor Dr. Otávio Coelho-Filho, students will have the opportunity to observe several consultations with patients presenting various types of cardiomyopathies. This includes rare causes such as hereditary conditions like amyloidosis, Fabry disease, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Additionally, in this outpatient clinic, we evaluate and select patients for cardiac transplantation and provide follow-up care for patients after heart transplantation.
