Dia 16/05, terça feira,  das 10 às 12h, no anfiteatro da pós-graduação da FCM, palestra Preclinical Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Microscopy and Spectroscopy, com Slobodan Macura, do Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences - Mayo Clinic

Nuclear magnetic resonance is a well-established analytical method capable of studying systems from molecular to macroscopic levels. It plays important role in clinical medicine as one of non-invasive imaging modalities (MRI).  Because of its noninvasiveness and sensitivity to slight physiological changes it is very suitable for studies of biological systems. In preclinical applications, besides imaging, NMR spectroscopy plays a prominent role in probing chemical composition of tissue extracts, body fluids and organs in vivo. In this talk examples of application of various NMR methods in studies of different biological models (cell cultures, perfused organs, zebrafish, mice and rats) will be presented. Examples will range from in vivo detection of tumors and multiple sclerosis lesions in mouse brain, perfusion, fibrosis and cysts in mouse kidney by NMR imaging/microscopy, to metabolomics analysis (chemical composition) of human body fluids (blood plasma, urine) by high resolution spectroscopy.
