During February 2024, two students from Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, finished internships at School of Medical Sciences of University of Campinas (SMS Unicamp). Leon Skowronek passed thru orthopedic and traumatological surgeries areas, and Sonja Maierbrugger thru dermatology.

The medical students told about their experience:

“I really enjoyed my time at the Clinical Hospital. My one-month stay flew by. During this time, I was able to gain a broad insight into the Brazilian healthcare system. I was able to take part in various orthopedic and traumatological surgeries and saw many procedures that I had never seen before in Austria. I also witnessed many exciting cases in the various outpatient clinics. I was also able to take part in student internships, which were very interesting and practice-orientated. But what impressed me the most was the openness and hospitality of the people in Brazil. I always felt very welcome. Even though I couldn't speak Portuguese, the doctors and nurses always tried to explain medical procedures to me in English. Even outside of the hospital, travelling to Brazil is definitely worthwhile. The country has so much to offer and the landscape is beautiful. I can highly recommend a stay in Campinas to anyone. I would definitely come back and will always have fond memories of this time”, said Leon.

“During my one-month clinical internship in the dermatology area in Campinas, I had a truly enriching experience. I had the opportunity to observe a variety of dermatological cases, ranging from common skin conditions to more complex problems. The medical staff was incredibly knowledgeable and dedicated, and I learnt a lot from them. Despite the language barrier, they made me feel included and explained the procedures to me in English. The medical students also made me feel welcome and translated a lot for me. I was also allowed to see the dermatological surgery, which was also very interesting. Outside the hospital, I immersed myself in Brazilian culture and enjoyed the lively atmosphere (especially the Carnival) and the delicious cuisine. My time in Campinas was unforgettable and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in such a welcoming environment. My clinical traineeship in Brazil was a life-changing experience that will forever hold a special place in my heart”, declared Sonja.
