1. Why should I choose the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) of UNICAMP to carry out a period of study?
The medical school at UNICAMP is one of the best in the country, able to meet the needs of medical training. The course develops skills for medical practice and allows the student to act guided by ethical principles and social responsibility.
The curriculum is organized into teaching modules that are developed full-time during the six years of the course. This curriculum model places the student from the first year in field activities, since allowing early in the course, a view of the medical profession.
From the third year, the student has the opportunity to join the program "Researcher in Medicine" for the subsequent obtaining undergraduate and doctoral degrees. The program offers two annual vacancies. The basic contents needed for training are taught in the first three years of the course, with activities integrated with the medical specialties, allowing the student an insight into the practical application of such content.
The last years of the course covers the disciplines that make up the medical internship, where prevails the development of intensive practical activities of patient care in the levels of primary, secondary and tertiary. The effective participation of the student takes place in outpatient areas, wards, operating rooms and emergency departments of the hospital complex at UNICAMP. In addition, students develop integrated care activities in Basic Health Public Units in the city of Campinas.
Teaching at boarding respecting an increasingly complex axis, enabling the student to make decisions and to participate in an effective and operative way in the care under direct supervision of qualified doctors and teachers to act as teaching aids. The performance of internal develops the redemption of ethical and humanistic dimensions of care, causing the student to recognize the values and principles that guide the doctor-patient relationship.
The infrastructure available for the development of medical school activities involves classrooms equipped with technological resources, several laboratories, centers and centers for study and research, skill building comprises rooms for simulating medical procedures, basic health units, as well the hospital complex that encompasses the Clinical Hospital, the Center of Integral Attention to Women's Health, the Center for Hematology, Disease Diagnostic Center for Digestive System and the State Hospital of Sumaré.
The coordinating body of the medical course, together with the Center for Evaluation and Research in Medical Education, conducts studies aimed at maintaining the quality of the course, as well as to the improvement of the evaluations. In this context, there is the evaluation system of learning that addresses skills related to cognition, skills and attitudes that are expected of the medical future.
2. What importance the SMS-UNICAMP gives to the international students?

3. What do I need to do to study at the SMS-UNICAMP as a regular student?
Undergraduate: Like many Brazilian universities, UNICAMP prepares and applies it´s own entrance examination. This examination is very competitive and requires a solid knowledge of the Portuguese language. It is given in two phases. Registration for the test is in September; the first phase is at the end of November and the second phase is in the beginning of January. The academic year at UNICAMP begins in February, with classes generally starting the first week in March. More detailed information can be found in www.comvest.unicamp.br.
Graduate: Rules for admission of foreign students in graduate programs of SMS-UNICAMP, in student status: regular.
The applicant should contact a teacher / advisor's intended course, expressing interest in joining the program. After the teacher has agreed to supervise you, the applicant must fill out the registration form in the selection process according to the calendar information. Submit to the selection of foreign students, which have specifics rules (curriculum assessment, design of research, etc.).

Among the documents necessary for admission, if issued by institutions based abroad:
- Certified copy of birth certificate: translated by a sworn translator and recognized by the consulate authority;
- Certified copy of college degree: translated by a sworn translator and recognized by the consulate authority.
In order to be valid in national territory, the documents produced abroad must be authenticated by Brazilian consular office in the country of origin of the documents, and translated by a sworn translator. Before arriving in Brazil, the interested student must attend the Brazilian consular office in the country of origin of the documents to authenticate them. Documents issued electronically must be signed by the higher education institution that dispatch, and authenticated by the Brazilian consular office in the country of origin.

5. Do you need to know Portuguese to attend the SMS-UNICAMP? What can I do to learn Portuguese?
Study at the SMS-UNICAMP as a regular undergraduate student: yes, you do need to speak Portuguese. To be admitted to classes of “Portuguese for foreigners” or “Portuguese for Spanish speakers”, candidates will be submitted to an interview by the Center of Languages Studies (CEL).
Study at the SMS-UNICAMP as a regular graduate student: no, You do not need to speak Portuguese. In this case you must speak English.

6. Do I need a health insurance?
All students must have a health insurance plan that covers medical expenses and repatriation from the day you leave your country. For this reason, UNICAMP demands that visitors obtain health insurance (travel insurance), which should be purchased in their home country prior to Your arrival in Brazil.
The insurance policy must be valid for the entire period of intended stay in the country. The choice of a specific travel insurance is under exclusive visitor responsibility.
Many types of international medication can be found in Brazilian pharmacies, but students are advised to bring their most frequently used medicine so that they can use this until they are familiarized with the Brazilian system.
Private hospitals and clinics in Campinas provide a good service but are usually expensive. UNICAMP owns three large public hospitals. Visitors can use the University Hospitals only in case of emergency.
7. How to find an accommodation?
The most common form of housing is the traditional “república”, which is a house or apartment rented by one student who then sublets rooms to other students, and then a total of 4 to 10 people can share the living expenses. Shared living arrangements cost approximately US$ 200 per month and may or may not include services.
It is possible to rent a room in lodgings (“pensão”), but this means that the student must follow certain rules regarding visits, curfew hours, etc. Also, meals may or may not be offered and there may be no place to keep valuables. However, a “pensão” could be ideal for temporary lodgings, as they are easily available and reasonably priced.
It is also possible to rent a studio apartment (“kitnet”), but a 12-month lease may be required. To rent a “kitnet” costs between US$ 300 to US$ 800 per month. Some include utility costs, but some do not. A three-month security deposit is usually required. Sometimes a co-signer may also be needed.

8. How to get to Barão Geraldo district by car
The University City Zeferino Vaz, the name of UNICAMP campus in Campinas, is located in the district of Barão Geraldo, about 12 km from the downtown and 110 km from São Paulo (approximately 1h20 drive away).
The highway that gives access to “Barão Geraldo” is SP-65 (Dom Pedro I Highway). In D. Pedro I Highway, go to marginal lanes via the exit 140, towards “Paulínia”. Go down the last access handle to take “Gen. Milton Tavares de Souza Highway” (SP-332: “Tapetão”). About 200 m, leave to the right direction towards “Barão Geraldo”.
SP-65 (Dom Pedro I Highway) can be accessed through:
• SP-348: “Bandeirantes Highway”;
From São Paulo by “Bandeirantes Highway”, pass the signs that say "Campinas" from the km 70 and only exit at km 95 to access “Adalberto Panzan Highway” (SP-102/330). This interconnection highway ends after 7 km in “Anhanguera Highway”. Immediately, take the right lane and less than 500 m, exit at km 103 to D. Pedro I Highway (SP-65).

9. How to get to SMS?
Standing in Barão Geraldo main entry, stay at right lane at the first traffic light, which becomes “Dr. Romeo Tórtima Avenue” (Av. 1). Go to the end, where you will find a roundabout, on which there is the symbol of UNICAMP in a concrete slab. In this roundabout, turn right and follow to the end of “Roxo Moreira street”. At the end you will find security controlled entrance. Cross the entry, follow by “Adolfo Lutz avenue”. Keep in the left lane and take the first roundabout, turning to the first right. The School of Medical Sciences (SMS) is a set of yellow buildings at right side. There are several parking lots in front of the SMS buildings.
10. How to get to Barão Geraldo district by bus
Campinas receives buses from all regions of the state of São Paulo and various cities of Brazil in “Multimodal Terminal Passenger Ramos de Azevedo”. To go to São Paulo there are buses every 15 minutes by “Comet” and “Cristália” companies. To go to Ribeirão Preto, “Comet” buses departures every hour.
Arriving in “Multimodal Terminal Passenger Ramos de Azevedo”, one should take Bus line 3.32 - UNICAMP, which runs every half hour from 6:00 A.M. to 23:00 P.M. Bus line 3.32 end point is “Hospital de Clínicas of UNICAMP”.
11. How to get São Paulo or Campinas by airplane
Campinas has an international airport: “Viracopos” (CPQ or SAO/VCP). You can also reach Campinas from the “International Airport of São Paulo”, located in Guarulhos city (SAO/GRU), or from “Congonhas Airport”, located in São Paulo (SAO/CGH).
The “LiraBus Tourism” operates lines connecting airports: “International Guarulhos (in Guarulhos city), Congonhas (in São Paulo city) and Viracopos (in Campinas city). There are direct buses to the bus station of Campinas (“Multimodal Terminal Passenger Ramos de Azevedo”). You can also come by taxi from the Viracopos Airport to UNICAMP, which costs around US$ 35.
12. What support SMS provides to international students?
The SMS International Team mission is to help undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and professors to have a successful and enjoyable time at the university. In addition, find some academic services to help you during your stay on UNICAMP main campus.
Language Center (CEL): Responsible for teaching foreign languages to students at the University of Campinas and Portuguese to foreign students studying at the UNICAMP.
Student Support Service (SAE): Responsible for welcoming, orientation and overseeing students and alumni and helping clarify specific issues or problems that may arise during their time at the university.
Student Psychological and Psychiatric Support Service (SAPPE): Responsible for providing medical (psychiatric) and psychological support and assistance to students at the University of Campinas.
International Relations Vice-Rector´s Office (VRERI): The main responsibilities of VRERI are to promote scientific, cultural, and technological collaboration between UNICAMP and other universities, and to coordinate the development of the international cooperation activities.
VRERI maintains up to date information about study abroad opportunities for brazilian students, and reference publications on international organizations and universities.
In addition, it provides assistance and orientation on immigration procedures for visiting professors/researchers from international institutions and brazilian faculty, students and staff.
13. What can I do besides study?
Sports activities are offered as extension programs at low price. There are also free activities offered by the “Mexa-se” (“Get moving”) program. More information at http://www.cecom.unicamp.br/mexa-se/.
The students can use Unicamp’s sports facilities, including the running track, at any time of the day. Also, you may prefer to exercise around the lake located at the “Parque Ecológico” beside the campus.
Cultural activities happen every day on campus. Many of them occur at the “Casa do Lago”, a cultural space that offers daily movie showtimes, musical performances, art exhibitions, among others.
